If there's such a thing as a mid-range 27' monitor, Acer seems to have made it

Acer S273HL

For AU$599, it's hard to be too unkind to the S273HL. Still, for a little more you could get the far superior U2711 — it all depends on your wallet.

Relatively cheap 27-inch offering ; Power frugal ; Large pixel pitch will help those who find themselves squinting at screens

No DVI port ; Little adjustment of stand ; 3.5mm in only functions with VGA port ; Auto-switches input when machine goes to sleep ; TN panel ; Awful speaker ; Annoying button placement ; Display is overly sharp ; Poor HDMI movie performance ; Excessive...

For AU$599, it's hard to be too unkind to the S273HL. It's slightly better in performance than ViewSonic's offering, even if it is missing a DVI port. But Dell's drastic price cutting now means that another AU$200 can get a U2711, which is massively...

Acer S273HL review

The 27in Full HD Acer S273HL is a fantastically novel design: the screen itself is incredibly thin, and has no ports or controls on the rear. Instead, it's attached to an L-shaped stand which contains the inputs and menu buttons. It's the sort of...

A unique and attractive design sets the S273HL apart, and its LED backlights help it achieve brilliant contrast and good colour reproduction, but it's far too expensive.

Acer S273HL review

It's not just the large screen that captures the attention — the Acer S273HL has a rather distinctive look, with an L-shaped base that keeps the screen stable while consuming very little desk space. Loudpeakers are built into the base, nicely recessed,...

The 27in Acer S273HL is a little too much quantity and perhaps not quite enough image quality. But it is aimed more at game-players and TV/film watcher than a general-purpose PC user.

Acer S273HL

A recent price cut fortunately brought Acer's S273HL just under our $599 price limit. That was good timing, as this is a stylish and versatile widescreen display that will particularly appeal to home users.

Attractive, well-thought out design; great image quality, birght and vivid; large widescreen display

No DVI interface for older Mac models; no headphone socket built into the monitor

Our only minor complaints about the Acer S273HL are that there’s no headphone socket built into the monitor, and that it doesn’t quite live up to its claim of providing a 170-degree viewing angle. Even so, the strong image quality, stylish design, and...

Acer's S273HL has an eye-catching metallic stand that will look good in any room; it even has a built-in backlight

Acer S273HL Large Panel

While panels over 20inches are becoming normal, 23inches is no longer regarded as large but this monster from Acer at a true 27inches must still qualify. Remembering the weight of my first 17inch monitor this panel is far less.

While there are two HDMI as well as VGA certain PC’s come only with a Digital connector and having this might have given extra options. So do check what you have before embarking on this purchase

Acer S273HL review

Enormous widescreen displays with 16:9 aspect ratios are in vogue at the moment. While obviously suited to video, they also allow business users to compare multiple documents side by side, such as large spreadsheets.

Bright and vibrant display; neat design

No DVI port; limited viewing angles; no height adjustment; ropey sound from built-in speaker

DVI is a significant omission and the poor viewing angles are an issue, but the Acer S273HL is otherwise a reasonably capable 27in display. Its appeal will be influenced by the street price, though, since the RRP is steep compared to the competition.

Acer - S273HL

Acer has enjoyed making a name for itself in the LCD display market in recent times, and not so long ago we saw it delving into the touchscreen arena with the effective, if inherently rather limited ...

We're left to conclude that Acer's S273HL is targeting itself fairly clearly towards gaming and video use and in these environments it's very impressive, partly due to the sheer size of the display. “Casual” gamers or media viewers may loathe the lack...
