Sony VAIO Tap 20 all-in-one PC

This touchscreen PC has a built-in battery -- you can use it on your couch

Built-in battery ; Large screen (for a tablet) ; Versatile design

Heavy, cumbersome ; Low screen resolution ; Bundled keyboard and mouse aren’t great

Sony’s VAIO Tap 20 wants to bridge the gap between your study desk and your couch. With its internal battery it’s good for around 90 minutes of Web browsing or video watching -- not a huge amount, but better than nothing. It’s got Ultrabook-class...

The Desktop Goes Mobile

Windows 8 has hardware manufacturers trying out some new dance moves. We've seen a wave of oddball hybrid devices running Microsoft's new touch-sensitive, power-sipping OS, most of which combine a portable tablet with a sliding or detachable keyboard....

Crazy enough to work: The battery-equipped Sony Vaio Tap 20 all-in-one

Mashing together tablet and desktop, the Sony Vaio Tap 20 might just be the most interesting Windows 8-launch PC.

By slapping a battery inside a 20-inch touch-screen all-in-one to make the ; , the company has given birth to a new PC category with great potential in tech-savvy homes.

The touch screen has some frustrating drag, and Sony made a few missteps among some otherwise reasonable sacrifices for portability and price.

A compelling experiment in tablet-desktop hybridization, the Sony Vaio Tap 20 is a great fit for home tech enthusiasts willing to try something new.

Sony VAIO Tap 20 (SVJ20215CXW)

The Sony VAIO Tap 20 is an all-in-one touch-screen desktop with an integrated battery.

Large screen. Has 10-finger multitouch screen. Innovative hinge and kickstand. Includes wireless keyboard and mouse. Comes with a battery for (limited) portability.

Mobile components limit performance. Not full 1080p HD. Only single-band Wi-Fi. Only 30-day subscription to Internet Security updates. Less than two hours battery life.

Sony Vaio Tap 20 review

This diminuitive 20in Sony is a bit of a wild card. Is it a desktop? Is it a giant tablet? Is it, perhaps, both? That's what Sony is going for with the Tap 20. It's a PC with a 20in screen and a fold-away stand, allowing it to either be a standard...

Sony Vaio Tap 20 review

A 20-inch Windows 8 tablet that fails to live up to the promise

Big, bright screen ; Built-in battery ; Bundled accessories ; USB 3.0 ports

Incredibly heavy ; Poor screen resolution ; Schizophrenic personality ; Middling performance

In 2012, Ultrabooks have turned the affordable laptop market on its head, touchscreens have attached themselves to every available panel, and tablet-laptop hybrids have left us questioning whether laptops are really even a thing any more.

The VAIO Tap 20 is an ambitious device. It does a good job of bringing the all-in-one PC form factor a measure of portability, although the battery life isn’t great and the large screen has a disappointingly low resolution.
