Panasonic TX-P42GT50

Panasonic's P50GT50 ‘fills the gap' between the ST50 and VT50s in outstanding fashion.

Sensational 2D picture quality ; Excellent 3D picture quality ; Some good online features

Not cheap by 42in TV standards ; Pictures not as bright as LED ones ; Viera Connect interface is cumbersome

Panasonic's GT50 plasma TV pushes picture quality and design envelope

With superb picture quality and beautiful external design, the GT50 is among the best plasma TVs of the year. But is it good enough to justify the high cost?

The ; series exhibited outstanding overall picture quality, characterized by exceedingly deep black levels with great shadow detail, accurate colors, and solid bright-room performance. Unlike LCDs, as a plasma it has superb off-angle and uniformity...

The GT50 isn't as strong a value as some competing plasmas. It uses more power than LCD TVs, and doesn't perform as well in bright rooms as those with matte screens. It doesn't come with 3D glasses. The GT50 is only available in 50-inch and larger sizes.

Superb picture quality and beautiful design place the Panasonic GT50 in the top tier of plasma TVs, but it's more expensive than others with similar performance.

Panasonic TC-PUT50 review: Panasonic TC-PUT50

Panasonic TC-PUT50

In pure dollar/performance terms the ; is one of the best TVs we've seen, with astounding picture quality for the money. Black levels are the equal of Panasonic's ST50 series in a darkened room, shadow detail is very good, and colors are accurate....

The UT50 series doesn't perform very well in a lit room, with blacks becoming muddy and indistinct. The performance of 3D is only passable, with quite distinct ghosting effects. The TV lacks advanced setup controls, which makes tweaking a better...

The Panasonic TC-P50UT50 plasma TV nearly matches the world-beating picture quality of the ST50 series, at an even lower price.

Panasonic TX-P42GT50 review

Our 2011 TV Product of the Year just got better

Excellent off-air images ; brilliant detail ; punchy colours ; simple to set up and use

Some rivals do slightly better smart features, but it’s nothing to lose sleep over

A sensational all-rounder, the TX-P42GT50B shows Panasonic has lost none of its plasma magic in 2012

Panasonic TX-P50GT50 review

Understated style ; clear Smart Hub with new-look iPlayer plus Netflix and Skype ; 3D glasses and pictures are better ; excellent HD tuners ; deep black levels, dynamic colours, incredible detail

Nothing of note

Best 50-52in TV, Awards 2012. The best just got better.

Panasonic TX-P50GT50 review

A close rival to the Sony KDL-46HX853 , Panasonic's P50GT50 has active-shutter 3D, a superb plasma screen and a ton of connections. But is it as Smart as the best hooked-up TVs?

Panasonic TX-P42GT50 review

Another day, another outstanding Panasonic plasma TV

Outstanding 2D picture ; Good 3D picture ; Extensive multimedia support ; Some good online features

Needs more online content ; Online interface issues ; Relatively expensive ; Chunky design

Panasonic's flagship VT50 plasma TVs are setting new picture standards this year, at least for people with a penchant for dimming the lights for serious film nights. However, the VT50 televisions are also tantalisingly beyond the financial reach of...

Panasonic TX-P50GT50 review

For 2D and 3D Blu-ray fans there's simply no better TV

Immaculate 3D ; Reference-level 2D Blu-ray ; No motion blur ; Deep black levels

No 3D glasses ; Drab user interface ; Manual digital file playback ; Average sound

Buying Guide Best Freeview HD TV Not many people buy plasma TVs any more, believing that LED-backlit televisions are cheaper and better. In fact, the differences between the two technologies at all screen sizes have shrunk to almost nothing – and the...

Panasonic Viera TC-P65GT50

The Panasonic GT50 plasma series, debuting at CES, offers few buzz-worthy elements. Well… that it to say that it has all of last year's buzzy features (3D, Skype, etc.), just rehashed for 2012 with minor improvements. That's not enough to dissuade our...

The Panasonic GT50 series continues a solid tradition of plasma TVs from the venerable manufacturer. We expect good, if not very good, picture quality. The baseline performance from the last two years of GT televisions has been strong, so any...
