Manual focus ring; cameralike mode wheel; shutter- and aperture-priority modes available for video; optical image stabilization; excellent LCD and microphone; takes decent snapshots.

Poor low-light video quality; microphone picks up motor noise.

Canon's feature-packed camcorder shoots very good daylight footage but has reason to be scared of the dark.

Canon Optura 400

 

The Canon Optura 400 shoots better-than-average videos and good still images, and it's our Editors' Choice for the $800-$1000 price range.

Very compact design. Flash for still-image capture, AF assist lamp, and headlight for low-light shooting make this a versatile model. Good still-image capture. Many manual controls, including audio recording level.

Bottom-loading design gets in the way of tripod usage. EVF doesn't extend, pivot, or have a rubberized eyepiece. Flash stills unsatisfactory.

I am by no means a video expert. I've done well over 4,000 shots on various digital still cameras.

Small size. Great picture. Acceptable still photos
